Tennis Tips For Beginners : How to Keep Score in Tennis

Okay, now I’m talking about scoring. I’m going to try to explain to you how to keep score. I would suggest watching a tennis match so that you get an idea of what it is I’m talking about. Maybe watching one of the US opens or British open, or whatever’s next. But basically, you start out at love-love or 0-0. If I’m in the service, it’s my serve, and I score a point, it then becomes 15-love.

When your opponent scores a point back, it becomes 15-all, and then 30-15, and 40-15. Basically, whoever gets a point after 40 wins that game. If you’re tied at 40-40 we call that deuce, and then there’s an advantage and you have to win by two advantages for that game. Now, I don’t want to get too technical on the scoring because I just want you guys to have fun and be able to volley and be able to use the techniques that I’ve taught you to enjoy a nice round of tennis.

Basically, what you have is a 6 game match. We call that a set. Whoever wins 6 games first wins that match. You can play several sets. What my friend and I do is we play 2 or 3 sets and it’s a 6 like the rules say. Then we also watch tennis. I encourage you to watch a lot of tennis and see strategies and to see how good these guys really are. I hope you enjoyed my tennis lesson and you’re not too scared to get out there and try to play by yourself or with a friend.
