Basketball Tips : How to Run a Basketball Defense: Zone 2-1-2

Coach Rudy, I’ve won championships as both a coach and a player. Lets talk about how to run the Two-One-Two or what’s called a Twenty-one Defense, alright. Couple things to keep in mind. These two guards have to commit to not letting the offensive player split the middle. If this guard gets to this free throw line it keeps, it creates a lot of chaos for this particular defense, so, we’re not going to let him do that, alright. Ball goes this way, this guy is on him, this guy is over, this guy is up, we’re in here, this guy is here watching, the vulnerable spot there. Ball goes to the corner, this guy is out, this guy is here, this guy is here, this guy is baseline, this guy is basket, this guy is here, alright. Same thing on the other side. Ball is on this side this guy is here, this guy is here, this guy is here, ball up here, this guy is in watching this spot, ball goes corner, this guy is out, this guy is down, this guy is over, this guy is here, this guy is here.

We’re always protecting this part of the zone in a Two-One-Two. Here is when you run it, when you know the other team doesn’t effectively have any good rebounders. And also they don’t have any really good outside shooters. They like to bang inside we’re going to keep them outside, we’re going to run a Two-One-Two, learn how to do it..
